Vale to invest in Zambia Konkola project

Copper mining, one of Zambia's core economic strengths and a major employer in the country will soon get a boost as the Brazilian company Vale plans to invest around $400 million in the Konkola Copper Project,.

The Konkola North project is a joint-venture project between Vale and African Rainbow Minerals. The company plans to begin developing the project in September this year and begin production by 2013. The capital required is around $400 million which will be invested over two and half years.

The project will employ about 1,500 people once its development starts and begin with a production of 50,000 tonnes of copper per year before going to 100,000 tonnes in the second phase.
